Nationwide has voted to remain a building society.
Its Annual General Meeting sealed the future of the company as a motion to convert to a bank was defeated by a majority of 33,700 votes.
A company spokesman welcomed the result, saying: "We can now pass on the benefits to our customers by retaining good value services."
The decision is unlikely to be reversed for at least three years, as a conversion vote would have to gain a 75 per cent majority.
