Autodesk - a design software supplier - is to buy Discreet Logic for $520m. The companies hope that their combined products will enable them to offer comprehensive packages for creating moving 3D images for film and television.
The merger will be effective from the end of this year. Autodesk chairman Carol Bartz said it is part of a strategy to expand the company's business reach.
