The British Computer Society (BCS) will announce the winners of its acclaimed IT awards this evening at a gala dinner in London. The best will be showcased for their technical innovation and the social benefits they bring.
BCS has published a short list of eight medallists, but the three winners will not be decided until after they have paraded their achievements before a panel of business people and academics at London's Le Meridien, this evening.
The medallists are: HM Land Registry's pilot database on national property; BT Labs' Intelligent Personal Assistant and its WirePlay protocol for speedy gaming; Oxford Brookes' University's Web browser for the visually impaired; The Open University's course on object technology; the Doors storage platform; Barclays' Bank's Trusted Third Party card for ecommerce and the Royal Hospital Haslar's telemedicine service.
Last year's winners included the University of Cambridge's Iris Recognition technology, which is now being piloted by Nationwide Building Society.
