French supermarket chain Geant has turned up the heat in the PC price war by offering a 300Mhz Cyrix machine for FF1,990 (E303).
However customers are obliged to sign a two year contract with Internet service provider (ISP) Infonie which charges FF149 (E22.7) a month.
Geant has 109 stores and is part of the Casino chain of hypermarkets. The retailer claimed in a statement that the offer was likely to "significantly boost Internet usage in France".
When told Geant would be selling the low-cost PCs, a spokesman at UK retailer Time Computers, said: "Unlimited Internet access is becoming free - many more ISPs will be providing it free in future."
He pointed out that the cost of Internet connection with Infonie for two years would be FF3,576 or approximately £376, and that "must be considered part of the charge of the PC - making a total of £556. Similar machines are available for under £500 in the UK".
