The Royal Bank of Scotland has signed up NCR to make its ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) compatible with next generation smartcards.
According to NCR, all 1,600 of its machines will be replaced or upgraded, and will be able to read smartcards by June 1999.
Steve Brooks, consultant at Hyperion, said: "All these deals open up the possibility of using cashpoints as general networked devices - not just to get your balance and cash." He added that smartcards open up ATMs to ticket booking services, making bill payments, and the creation of electronic purses.
The roll out will be carried out site by site to avoid disruption.
