Prudential switches to ATM

With an eye on the convergence of voice, data and video, the Prudential has turned to K-Net for an ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) network.

The 500 seat installation will cost the finance giant £900,000. The network will handle key applications including the Pru's document imaging and distributed document management systems.

Another key reason why the company chose to migrate from token ring to a multimedia ATM environment was to enable desktop and room-based videoconferencing for staff, with assured quality of service.

K-Net will also supply and install the H.323-based videoconferencing system.

The ATM implementation - already up and running at the Pru's Reading, Glasgow and Bristol offices - is based on two Fore ASX-1000 switches with dual 622Mbps interlinks, and Forerunner LE 155s on the edge of the network with dual 155Mbps uplinks, one to each switch.
