Just days after two US stock exchanges announced plans to link up, the prospect of a combined European bourse has hit the agenda again.
ParisBourse, the Amsterdam Exchanges and the Brussels Exchanges are in the final stages of negotiation over a possible merger, according to reports in the Wall Street Journal.
If the merger goes through, it will result in a pan-European trading system that would be second only to the London Stock Exchange. The move - which has been discussed in the past by all eight stock exchanges - is a response to pressure from traders to cut costs and open up access.
Chicago Board Options Exchange and the Pacific Exchange announced earlier this week they will team up to supply stock feeds from major US stock exchanges, including Nasdaq.
