Ebusiness gap is widening in UK workforce

There is a growing gap in the UK between ecommerce strategy and implementation, according to recruitment consultants Harvey Nash.

The company surveyed 300 UK IT directors and discovered that while nearly 90 per cent of them were responsible for implementing their company's ebusiness projects, only 68 per cent had been involved in setting the strategy for those projects.

Anthony Wills, managing director of Harvey Nash's executive search and selection division, said the gap is worrying and advised companies to make more use of IT directors' skills and experience at the strategy stage.

The survey also explored issues being faced by IT directors in implementation. The main difficulties facing ebusiness projects are losing staff to ecommerce start-ups, the speed at which Internet and ecommerce technologies are evolving and the transition of an IT department into the company's ebusiness unit.
