ICL denies pro-Microsoft bias

ICL has refuted claims that its close relationship with Microsoft is denying its customers a genuine choice in software strategy.

In an exclusive interview with Silicon.com, Andrew Boswell, chief technology officer at ICL, fought back against allegations that his company's future was solely based around the Windows platform.

He said: "We need to be able to meet the needs of our customers. In many cases Microsoft technology is the right technology, but that is not to say we will be forcing it in situations where it is not the best choice."

However, he was keen to stress the strengths of Microsoft's latest operating system, even though it shipped with over 60,000 'defects'.

He said: "Windows 2000 is one of the most heavily tested operating systems ever. We have been deploying Windows 2000 in beta tests since last year and I am convinced of its reliability. We have been rolling out Windows 2000 to the magistrates courts in London at a rate of about 30 users per day."

Boswell also pointed out what ICL brings to the alliance: "People do expect more, but the basis of our alliance is that we have pledged to work with Microsoft to make their software look more attractive."
