IBM has won a $200m, five-year outsourcing contract to provide BP with application management and hosting services.

BP has several thousand applications worldwide that have been adopted over time by the companies which now make up the organisation, including British Petroleum, Amoco, ARCO and Burmah Castrol.

John Leggate, group vice president for group digital business at BP, said in a statement: "We intend to go beyond simply rationalising this 'legacy portfolio'. Instead we are externalising support and maintenance to IBM and SAIC so that BP can focus on managing and developing web-centric, scalable and flexible services for BP worldwide."

The applications hosted will range from corporate functions to retailing and manufacturing.

BP has over 100,000 employees world wide.
