French government finally dragged into information age

The French public minister Michel Sapin has finally unveiled plans to take the French administrative process online.

As part of the government's PAGSI programme (governmental action plan for the entry of France into the information society), the site, www.service-public.fr, offers citizens information on all aspects of regulatory and administrative life in France from TV licences to employment law.

Speaking at the launch, Sapin said the site was a means of streamlining the administration and making it more accessible.

The site also offers an online legal assistant to inform users of their rights and pop up notices to inform surfers of any important changes or developments as they happen.

According to Sophie Moati, director of public records, all current legal texts applicable to France will be online by the end of the year. She also said that by 2001 it will be possible to carry out many administrative procedures online such as submitting and receiving planning applications.
