
The European Commission is investigating the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Bill under four separate counts of possible illegality under EU law.

MEP Diana Wallis asked the Commission whether aspects of the RIP Bill like email interception could be considered "unacceptable measures on the basis that they are a breach of the right to privacy and free speech".
Erkki Liikanen, European Commissioner for enterprise and information society, said in a statement: "The Commission is currently examining the Act to determine if it is compatible with the provisions of several Community dispositions."
