The New York Stock Exchange crashed today for almost an hour and a half due to an undefined system failure - its first crash since 1998.
The exchange halted trading at 10:10 am local time (15:10 BST) due to technical problems, affecting an unknown number of stocks including 10 of the 30 which make up the crucial Dow Jones Industrial Average.
The Chicago Mercantile Exchange was also forced to halt some trading as a result. It suspended trading in the Standard & Poor's 500 stock index futures and the S&P MidCap 400 futures because of the New York crash.
Chicago resumed trading at 11:20 local time and the New York exchange returned to life at 11:35.
In a statement the NYSE blamed: "a connectivity problem between data sites and the Exchange that impacted primarily small order delivery to approximately half the trading floor."
