IT departments are under greater stress during the summer months, according to a survey published today.

The study, published by systems integrator Bull, found European IT departments are stretched to their limits because of holidays and increased absenteeism. The average decrease in staffing levels was said to be 40 per cent.

In addition to staffing problems, June, July and August see a 20 per cent increase in end-users reporting problems. Temporary staff were blamed for increasing demands on help desks. IT staff also cited the increased threat of theft as a cause for worry.

The figure is based on data collected from Bull's customer base across Europe.
