silicon.com special offer on 50th anniversary of first business app

silicon.com is joining forces with IEE Event Services to offer readers a 50 per cent discount to a conference next week celebrating the 50th anniversary of the world's first business software application.

The conference - to be held at the Guildhall, London on 5 to 6 November - will look at the past, present and future of business computing. It will also mark use of the first business application to run 'live' on a computer, Lyons Electronic Office (LEO).

'Business Computing: the second 50 years' will feature George Cox, director general of the Institute of Directors John Ashworth, chairman of the British Library and Anthony Giddens, director of the London School of Economics.

Highlights of the conference include:

The world's first systems and programming manager, David Caminer, who led the software side of the J Lyons project from beginning to end, 50 years ago.

Workshops looking at the future of the e-world, including lessons from the dot-com fall out and security risks and precautions.

A panel discussion looking at the next five decades led by Richard Hudson (managing editor of the Wall Street Journal Europe) and including Rudy Berger (director, MIT Media Lab Europe), Herman Hauser (Chariman, Amadeus Partners) and Geoff Unwin (Group CEO, CapGemini Ernst & Young).
