US companies are still reluctant to invest in Linux because they see Microsoft as a safer choice.

A study by Goldman Sachs showed 65 per cent of IT executives surveyed at large companies are not looking to invest in Linux in the next few years. Most companies are sticking to household names such as Dell, EMC, IBM, and Microsoft, at the expense of the open source software.

According to the study, the top IT investments were Windows 2000 or XP, security software and Unix. However, many IT workers said they would use Linux as an addition to their Windows range but not as a replacement.

The report concluded that most companies are still experimenting with Linux and see Windows as a safe option for return on investment.
