Novell CEO Jack Messman will take on the chairman's job too following the departure of Dr Eric Schmidt.
Messman is former CEO and chairman of Cambridge Technology Partners, who Novell took over in July of this year.
The move leaves Schmidt free to concentrate on his job as CEO and chairman of Google.
