Long waits for planning permission could be a thing of the past under a new e-government contract with Unisys.

The IT services firm has picked up a deal from the Department of Transport, Local Government and the Regions (DTLR) to build a system to store, process and track information relating to planning casework.

Famed for its heavy paper-based workload, the Planning Inspectorate has long been the butt of many a bureaucratic joke. But the Planning Casework Service will aim to change that, allowing members of the public, local planning authorities and planning professionals to submit, track and view cases online.

The Planning Inspectorate handles around 20,000 cases a year from over 6,000 caseworkers, administrators and inspectors.

Unisys will deliver a pilot system in spring 2002. No financial details of the contract were released.
