Vodafone has teamed up with a number of hardware companies in a bid to to make it easy for business users to connect to their systems via mobile and wireless devices.

The giant operator has signed agreements with, among others, computing giants Dell, Fujitsu-Siemens, HP, IBM, Psion Teklogix and Toshiba under its 'Connected by Vodafone' initiative.

For example, IBM will supply ThinkPads that use a Nokia GPRS PCMCIA card to allow users to connect to back office systems over virtual private networks.

GPRS is an always-on packet-based data standard.

IBM will start its roll out in the UK and expand to the rest of Europe, where Vodafone offers GPRS roaming.

Users will be able to purchase network-ready handheld computers from Vodafone, which after the launch of Vodafone live! and its Remote Access service for businesses is concentrating on ease of use.
