Don't throw those PCs away! Instead of chucking older kit in a skip - which is now a big no-no thanks to the WEEE directive - many companies are donating their old computers to organisations which send them on to schools and community projects in countries that need them.

Computer Aid International is one such charity which provides reconditioned and recycled PCs for schools and community projects in the developing world. A team of three from CNET Networks UK, publisher of silicon.com, travelled to Kenya earlier this year to raise money for the IT industry charity with a 400km cycle ride.

The team's efforts saw a sea container full of recycled PC equipment arrive in Kenya in April.

But it's not just PC recycling - office equipment giant Ricoh announced plans earlier this year to help customers reduce their carbon footprints, as well as improve conditions in the developing world through planting fruit trees in Africa.
