One such solution is a sat-nav system that directs drivers down the most eco-friendly routes to save fuel and minimise greenhouse gas emissions, being developed by Swedish researchers.

Videoconferencing is also being pushed as a technology to help companies stay lean and green, by cutting down unnecessary travel to meetings.

Recent research from Frost & Sullivan found the market for high-end videoconferencing will reach more than $409m by 2013, as CIOs look to cut costs and carbon emissions.

And it's not just top execs who are aware of the issue. UK employees think more than one-third of face-to-face business meetings are both unnecessary and counter-productive, according to research commissioned by WebEx.
