Energy company Centrica has appointed Virgin's Gareth Lewis as new group CIO.

Lewis joins Centrica in November from Virgin where he has been group CIO for the holding company of all the Virgin brands since 2002.

He replaces Peter Brickley, who has been Centrica CIO since 2003 and left earlier this year.

Lewis was voted one of the UK's top 50 CIOs in the silicon.com CIO50 2007 and was responsible for developing an IT strategy that combined keeping operating costs down with driving new business.

In keeping with Virgin's entrepreneurial culture Lewis himself took a lead role in the establishment of a number of new Virgin businesses, mainly in the telecoms sector.

Lewis' career spans roles at Cable & Wireless, Digital Equipment Corporation, KPMG and Unisys and he is a board member of the Telecommunications Management Forum.
