Since its very inception, there has been no shortage of voices clamouring for the end of the ID card scheme.

Such voices now have even more fuel for their argument: new research has estimated just how much the UK could save by ditching the increasingly-unloved scheme. Unsurprisingly, the figure is in the billions.
