Regarding the previous comment from Alan - I share you cynicism with regard to "best practices" - see my definition at www.estherderby.com/weblog/2004/02/best-practice-vs-useful-practice.html.

However, there are some good basic concepts in ITIL - the separation of incident and problem being the most important, IMHO.
