On the one hand the issue is not everyday freedoms, but freedom of expression and the history of China's approach to human rights. Drinking laws and clothing laws are not the same as outright criticism of govt - which westerners have a right to do (and their govts have a right to ignore).
That said, I think China is tainted by US and UK propaganda, which is part envy and part suspicion based on ignorance.
