It is not surprising the chasm between business and IT departments still exists when only 13 per cent of CIOs are formally measuring the ROI gained from their IT systems. No wonder a staggering number are unable to fully promote the business value of their investments to the board.

Companies must not only recognise the importance of innovating through the use of IT, they must also ensure that the financial value of IT assets gets proper recognition. Recent research from Micro Focus and KPMG revealed that, out of 70 global corporations across six industry sectors, only six attributed financial value to their technology assets in their annual accounts. Full IT asset financial valuations could make all the difference whether the company is verifying it has the resources to acquire, or if it is fighting off an acquisition approach.

A better understanding of an organisation’s IT assets will allow the CIO to offer the currently elusive "strategic influence” within the company, by demonstrating how technology is increasing the value of the business to other members of the management team, thus bridging the gap between business and IT.
