Great story, Peter.
I have a similar anecdote.
I used left-over three-part, carbonless paper forms in my Entrepreneurship and Innovation class for in-class assignments. I kept the top copy to mark and the students kept the bottom two carbon copies for home use. The forms were from a strategy course from the 1980s.
After the first round of exercises I had to give detailed instructions on how to use carbon paper to the class because most people got it wrong - so much for self assumption testing.
One person thought this was the greatest idea and later asked me in the hall if I invented this...
I thought "cc" nowadays stood for "courtesy copy".
