I totally agree with your thoughts on securing your own personal data.
Unfortunately, security is only ever as good as its weakest link. Given we have to provide various elements of all this information to government bodies, retailers, insurers, schools, doctors and many other organisations we are all exposed to the lax security measures that they adopt.
Each day there seems to be yet another news story about a retailer, credit card company or national tax authority that has misplaced significant amounts of personal data.
And once your ID is compromised once, the chances of it occurring again are significantly increased.
