It shouldn't be the first question you ask at a first interview, but, apart from the three people in the country who do it purely for the love of it, we all work for money which we use to buy things like houses and food. Interviews are as much about whether a person wants to work for a company as it is about whether the company wants the person, so the salary question is a valid one that should be asked.
