Recently silicon.com managing editor Will Sturgeon joined Salesforce.com's Salesforce Foundation on a project in San Francisco that would see a run-down plot of land turned into a colourful, safe children's playground in the space of just one day.

08:00: Shortly after sunrise on Saturday 7 October a group of around 100 volunteers descend upon Bayview YMCA in the Hunter's Point neighbourhood of San Francisco.

This first picture shows the scene that greets them – a fairly bleak area of rubble at the back of the parking lot. Within eight hours the volunteers will turn it into a colourful playground in an area of San Francisco that is a far cry from the riches of Silicon Valley.

Many of the volunteers at this event, organised by children's charity Kaboom, come from Salesforce.com and technology partner Vertical Response. The two companies between them ploughed $55,000 into the venture – as well as marshalling the many hands.
