Two-thirds (66 per cent) of companies around the globe are using IT infrastructure library (Itil) - the IT service delivery framework - to help manage their IT infrastructure.

And in terms of performance, Itil scored an average of three out of five - higher than any other framework - in a survey of more than 370 CIOs in 14 countries carried out by managed services company Dimension Data.

Engagement with other best practices drop off sharply after Itil with Microsoft Operations Framework and Six Sigma the next most popular, followed by Prince 2, ISO, CMMi, ASL, CoBIT and TQM.

Itil is a set of best practices for delivering public or private sector IT services and is overseen by the UK's Office of Government Commerce.

The survey also found the size of organisation has an impact on Itil adoption with companies of less than 100 employees rarely using Itil compared with 87 per cent of companies of more than 10,000 employees using it in some form.

Itil remains most popular in Europe with 72 per cent of respondents in the region having evaluated or implemented it.

Scott Petty, services executive at Dimension Data, said the survey confirms Itil is the de facto standard around the world and is becoming increasing established in the US and Asia Pacific.

He added organisations are waking up to the potential of best practice in IT and are taking a closer look at how it can help improve the performance of their tech.
