How much will you be earning in 10 years' time?

According to new research, many IT professionals can expect to see their salary rise by around an average of £10,000 every five years.

Tech workers with more than 10 years' experience earn on average £47,830 per year, the research found - that's £11,313 more than those with between five and ten years' experience.

Similarly, those with five and 10 years' experience have an annual salary of £36,517, bringing them £9,867 more than their counterparts with under five years' experience.

Techies working in project management are those likely to see the biggest jumps in earnings as they progress up the career ladder.

An individual working in project management will see their salary rise from £26,915 when they have less than five years' experience to £40,431 when they've accumulated between five and 10 years' experience - an increase of £13,816.

Those same techies can also expect to see their wages leap by a further £10,011 by the time they've clocked up over 10 years in the job, giving them an average annual paypacket of £50,442.

It's another piece of good news for project managers - the survey also found that they're among the best paid IT workers with an average annual wage of £41,465, second only behind IT management staff who make £52,530.

The research is based on 992 UK IT workers who used the activeTechPros benchmarking salary tool between April and June 2009.

activeTechPros, part of silicon.com's parent company CBS Interactive, allows tech professionals to benchmark their salary against their peers from different countries, covering a total of 36 IT job functions across various countries, industries and company sizes.
