A popular misconception but companies like Google and Facebook are not IT companies, they are in fact Marketing companies that utilise and use technology to reach people in new ways.

These companies have enough gloss and sparkle to attract woman employees but I don't believe it's because there they'll be able to explore their natural scientific inclination more than in other companies.

Perhaps what woman that are natural problem solvers, multi-taskers and good communicators need to do is join IT companies in non glamorous sectors (Manufacturing, CPG etc) where there are seriously complex problems that need solving. They could bring fresh perspective in an industry that is stuck in the 70's with UI's being built by men with pens in the top pockets of their shirts.

The problem perhaps is those women don’t want to apply their skills in industries that truly need them because it means being stuck in an office in the middle of some god forsaken town with bad weather all year-round being surrounded by techies working for a company that non of their friends know. There’s more appeal working for a company everyone knows with offices in the heart of a cosmopolitan city rubbing shoulders with the 1000 or so millionaire employees.

My point? Not sure, however what I am sure of is that woman have many skills that are greatly needed in the IT sector the problem perhaps is that their CV's are not being sent to the companies that truly need them.
