Earlier this year, a Greenpeace report criticised Apple's environmental record.

And while not all commentators agreed with the environmental group's choice of targets, shortly after Greenpeace's report Steve Jobs, CEO of Apple, made a public commitment to environmental action this year by posting a 1,880-word letter on the Apple website.

Jobs wrote: "Apple plans to completely eliminate the use of arsenic in all of its displays by the end of 2008. Apple plans to reduce and eventually eliminate the use of mercury by transitioning to LED backlighting for all displays when technically and economically feasible."

He also said the company will begin taking back unwanted iPods for free recycling at its stores around the world - previously it had accepted iPods for recycling at only its US stores.
