Although most UK businesses are 'techno-sceptics', 40 per cent predict they will engage in ecommerce within the next five years, according to a survey commissioned by BT.

A series of 550 interviews with company bosses revealed 59 per cent find the level of investment needed to keep pace with the evolution of IT "frightening". However, the same research showed around 10 per cent of UK firms - typically small companies - regard IT as an opportunity which will give them a competitive advantage.

BT said the research highlights the different rates at which UK companies are embracing new technology.
