DTI throws weight behind SME technology audit

The UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) yesterday announced support for an IT legality audit aimed at the small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).

The Continuous Compliance Programme, offered by the Initiative for Software Compliance (iSC), will provide certification that SMEs have reached a minimum level of compliance to a wide range of IT laws. The certification's coverage includes software licensing, data protection and security, and IT misuse.

In his first speaking engagement as DTI minister for small firms, Michael Wills praised the initiative. "It's very easy to stray inadvertently. It's important that all organisations understand the legal and moral responsibilities surrounding their use of IT," he said.

The programme is being offered for a fixed price, based on the number of desktop PCs. Prices range from £9,350 for businesses with less than 50 PCs to £17,500 for 200 PCs.

The iSC - launched 12 months ago - is attempting to codify a standard for the legal and secure use of IT.
