SMEs failing to make the Web work

By Sarah Left

The latest report from Durlacher Research indicates that only one per cent of small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the UK are using the Internet to its full advantage, even though 75 per cent have Internet access.

The BT-sponsored survey also revealed that 15.7 per cent of SMEs have signed up with free Internet service providers (ISPs). Durlacher found that SMEs believe ecommerce can give their businesses a competitive advantage but claimed few organisations seem to understand how to translate that into action in their own businesses.

The manufacturing sector topped the ranks of sectors with a Web presence, followed closely by distributors and wholesalers, and then retail.
