XP registration slammed by beta testers

Small businesses will be caught in software registration purgatory if they want to use Microsoft's next-generation XP operating system and application suite.

The software giant's plans to protect Windows and Office applications against piracy through compulsory registration has been criticised by beta testers as over-elaborate, and a waste of time.

Microsoft tried to allay fears that staff will spend days having their programs registered by sending large customers a key with the CD package that will save their staff from the elaborate registration procedure.

According to a Microsoft spokesman, very small companies that only need one or two licences will still have to register.
