Almost 60 per cent of UK businesses have access to the web - up ten per cent on last year's figures.
The growth is due to small businesses anxious to have access to email, according to the latest report from NOP Research.
However, the trend towards offering transactional services is being pushed by large organisations, which have deployed e-business applications to help get their e-commerce strategies up and running.
Few small firms offer goods online.
In the report 16 per cent said the reason for going online was to keep up with competitors.
Of those organisations not online, 21 per cent said they were planning to get online next year.
