Nokia locks out SME security breaches

Remotely managed or controlled inhouse, the choice is yours...

Nokia is offering small businesses the benefits of VPNs (virtual private network) and firewalls in a deal with Check Point software.

The Finnish giant's newly launched IP71 internet security appliance comes pre-installed with Check Point's software for use specifically in small or distributed networks.

VPNs are much cheaper than a system using owned or leased lines but can bring the same capabilities using the shared public infrastructure.

IT-savvy employees with specialist expertise are not common in small companies. However, Nokia claims it will be able to keep down the costs of ownership because the product comes ready to install.

Andrew Steggles, marketing director for internet communications EMEA at Nokia, said Check Point can be either securely managed remotely or managed inhouse.

He said: "There is a much greater awareness in both SMEs and large corporations that security is something they've got to think about. Because installation of security products can be a logistical nightmare, this product comes preinstalled with an operating system and firewall software."
