Today sees the launch of the fourth 'UK online for ecommerce' awards.

The awards, officially launched by e-envoy Andrew Pinder, are co-run by InterForum, an organisation that helps British businesses to start trading online.

The competition is open to all organisations with fewer than 250 employees and offers a total prize fund of £126,000. The overall winner stands to scoop £40,000.

Last year there were 1,200 entrants - a threefold increase on 2000.

Phil Flaxton, CEO of InterForum, said: "I certainly hope we can substantially increase this figure this year."

He said that as a fast-growing sector of the UK's business it is important that SMEs be highlighted as achievers.

He told silicon.com: "It gives UK SMEs the opportunity to demonstrate how they are implementing new technology."

Flaxton added that the winning companies will be highlighted as case studies on the awards' website and in a forthcoming book.

Last year's overall winner was conveyancing company Pryse Jones.
