Apple has taken the wraps off its first rack-mounted server, called Xserve.

The machine is a 1-U (1.73-inch high) rack-mount that combines Mac OS X's Unix core operating system with remote management capabilities.

Up to 42 units can be stacked in an industry-standard eight-feet high rack.

The entry-level machine features a 1GHz PowerPC G4 processor, 256K L2 cache and 2MB L3 cache as well as 256MB of DDR SDRAM, while the high-end server features dual 1GHz processors and additional Apple drive modules.

Xserve can hold half a terabyte of data per machine, equating to more than 20TB per 42-U configuration.

Announcing the server, Jobs said: "One word describes our entrance into the server market: 'humble'."

"He added: "We have a lot to learn."
