Venture capitalists' investment in Silicon Valley companies has hit a four-year low.

A study by PricewaterhouseCoopers, Venture Economics and the US Venture Capital Association found that during the second quarter of this year, VC funding in Bay area start-ups dropped almost to 1998 levels.

The VCs invested $1.974bn overall in the second quarter, down from $2.081bn the previous quarter, a drop of 5.1 per cent.
