13.11.98 Comdex Fall98 starts next week, with technology vendors out in force to present their visions of the future. The IT industry's biggest trade show will feature a Linux Pavilion, stalls on everything from call centres to encryption and the latest digital TV hardware.
Over 220,000 people are expected to attend the four-day event, which runs from 16 to 19 November at the Las Vegas Convention Center.
In a special Sunday night keynote speech, Microsoft chairman and CEO, Bill Gates will profile his company as an innovator, just as lawyers are trying to do the opposite in court. Other keynotes will come from the heads of Compaq, Computer Associates, Intel, Lotus, Oracle, UUNet and Xerox.
13.11.03 Like most trade shows, Comdex this time round won't be as large as it was back then but it will still have something to offer.
Linux is no longer a novelty and for Y2K, read the beginning of real concerns over compliance and risk management. Phrases such as Sarbanes-Oxley - or 'Sox' - and Basel II are about to be heard a lot more often.
However, it's good to see that past events haven't all been about hype. Security has come on in leaps and bounds (as have the threats) and digital TV is now with us, though not in all countries.
And how about the characters? Well, apart from those companies no longer around to give a keynote or exhibit, there will be the regular-as-clockwork Sunday evening Bill Gates keynote. Call us weird but we're looking forward to it.
We'll be bringing you what he has to say when he takes the lectern and, along with our US sister sites, taking the temperature on the show floor next week.
