Crime can be used to justify literally ANY measure, up to and including total 24/7 surveillance and electronic tagging of each individual.

In fact all that happens is our privacy gets eroded, we sign away our rights in exchange for "convenience" like impatient babies who must have gratification now ("Me not want to look for clothes, gimme now") and crime levels either fail to drop - the widespread intro of CCTV has done little to the overall figures - or new crimes, like identity theft and credit card fraud, begin to happen.

Implying that "law-abiding" citizens never have anything to fear is a dumb argument, which doesn't accept that those administering these measures are fallible humans just like us and therefore as capable of mistakes, malicious acts and even criminal acts themselves once in possession of vast amounts of data about someone.

You always shop on a Friday night? Great, my brother will be round to collect your VCR & DVD while you're away then.

Givng up rights does not lead to safety and security, it simply makes us that bit less responsible and that bit more dependent on the whims of others.
