This is very worrying. Yes, M&S have shown a high degree of social responsibility - but other retailers won't necessarily do the same. The danger with this trial is that it could lead to high street RFID tagging becoming the norm.
Whilst applauding M&S for their approach I think the trial should be stopped. We need a legal privacy framework in place *before* we allow any RFID tagging at item level.
It must be made strictly illegal to record RFID identity in any way which could be associated with the identity of the purchaser without prior opt-in permission.
