It isn't easy to prevent a DoS attack, if someone fires gigbytes of data at you it still ties up the available bandwidth on the line. If you stop it at your firewall then you still have no chance of a useable internet connection, you have to stop it further up the line. Great for you, but your ISP still loses some of their own bandwidth further up the line.
