I totally agree. I'm from the same generation as you, with a similar background. When I was 16 (1964) our school let us have access to the computer in the College next door: one of the very first examples of computing in school. I and a mate rapidly ran rings around the teachers and computer admins as we became absorbed in figuring out how the thing worked at the machine-code level. To some extent we were trusted and encouraged (with misgivings!) - it was a great time: until we were told that computers were part of maths and to be in computers you had to do a maths degree ;-(
Now I've decided to take on a new job, bringing edgy stuff into a computing department curriculum in the hope of inspiring the kids...
