Got a good tech idea? There could be a slice of £80m for you
The government has R&D grants for the most innovative techies

The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has today announced an £80m package for companies pushing tech innovation.

The huge handout will be spent as grants for business carrying out research and development into nine key areas of technology - simulation and modelling, nanotechnology, pervasive computing, waste management, smart materials, bio-based industrial products, energy technologies, imaging technologies and optoelectronic and disruptive electronic technologies.

The nine fields have been identified as areas where there are gaps in the market, according to trade and industry secretary Patricia Hewitt, and where tech innovation could potentially mean extra jobs and cash for the UK.

For more information about how to apply for the grants, go to the DTI website. Applicants will need to submit an initial five page outline by 7 February next year.
